Musical Storytelling Supplies

Many of our blog readers asked for suggestions of appropriate instruments and props to use during their Musical Storytelling. We created a list of instrument and props for you as well as websites where you might find these teaching tools.

Suggested Supplies for “Music in a Box”

  • Egg Shakers or Chiquita’s-(1-2) per child
  • Jingle Bell Bands (1 per child)
  • Rhythm Sticks (8”-12” size)-1 pr. Per child
  • Colorful, transparent scarves (1 per child)
  • 12’ parachute
  • Laminated pictures or plastic toys related to story on theme


(You may want to have enough supplies or toys related to the story theme.)

****INITIAL SING, PLAY, LEARN CD RELEASE PARTY INFORMATION: You and your library community are invited to attend the official MacPhail CD: Sing, Play, Learn with MacPhail CD release event held at the Minnesota State Fair, Wednesday, September 1, 10:00-11:30AM. This event will be held at Carousel Park. Be one of the first to hear and experience selections from this CD, performed by musicians who participated in the original production, and also AND RECEIVE A FREE CD (supplies are limited) Sing, Play, Learn with MacPHail is a ground-breaking Early Childhood CD created and performed by the MacPhail Early Childhood Faculty, Adam Linz (Bass), JT Bates (Drums), Brian Nichols (Piano), and Carnage, and funded through the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage fund.

****CD RELEASE PARTY AT DOWNTOWN MACPHAIL: How Exciting! MacPhail is offering a NEW! concert series open to all ages- the New! MacPhail Free Family Music Series at our Downtown Location this year. The Series will be offered four times throughout the year, on Saturday mornings at the Downtown MacPhail location (501 South 2nd Street, Minneapolis). The concerts are FREE to the community. The Series will commence Saturday, September 11, 11 AM-Noon, featuring a preview of our new Sing, Play, Learn with MacPhail CD! Opportunities to explore musical instruments, and create a musical instrument, plus treats and class information will also be a feature of this concert series. The first 50 families will receive a free CD. Families who register for our Fall Early Childhood Music Classes will be eligible to receive a complementary Sing, Learn, Play CD!
