Favorite Singing Voices for Young Children

Young children enjoy listening to a wide variety of music. As an Early Childhood Music Educator, I am frequently asked, “What kind of music should young children listen to?”  I have an easy answer. Young children should be exposed to a wide variety of musical styles, genres, voices, and instruments.

Young children should be exposed to many different vocal qualities and music genres. Young children are not only developing their unique listening abilities, even prenatally, but also their listening preferences and “setting the stage” for future music development and literacy development. The ability for young children to recognize a favorite singer or a musical instrument from a listening selection demonstrates listening in other areas of literacy learning such as phonemic development.

Your library has an array of musical listening selections that can assist you with developing an early music listening foundation for children. What a gift it is to choose different music listening selections that can be played in the car, at home and even transitioning to and from activities-such as nap time, bath time, or assisting with bedtime routines.

This blog lists many famous singing voices that young children seem to enjoy. This list is ever-changing, and the artists listed below are only a small sample of the listening opportunities young children can experience. The list can go on forever. Think about the voices that have inspired you!
